What Northern Beaches jobs need

Rock on the headlands, sand on the flats, and bush on the plateau

Digging in Freshwater depends on which ground you're on, and it changes every couple of kilometres. The headlands and the plateau are sandstone at or near the surface, so a pool or basement is rock work; the flats behind the beaches are sand over lagoon silt with the water table close, so the same pool is a shored, dewatered dig. The plateau backs onto bushfire-rated bush and the lagoons carry flood controls, so the site look sorts out which one before anything's quoted.

What's different about digging in Freshwater

Freshwater, in short

Freshwater sits about 14 kilometres north-east of the city. It's anchored by Freshwater Beach, Freshwater headland and Harbord Diggers. It's ringed by Queenscliff, Curl Curl, Brookvale and Manly. What's changing: knock-down rebuilds and duplexes, and pools, drainage and site-cuts in the sandy beachfront blocks.

The houses, and what they need

Most blocks in Freshwater, around Freshwater Beach, are mid-century beach cottages giving way to knock-down rebuilds and unit blocks. Near Freshwater Beach, the older brick and fibro is renovate-or-rebuild ground. The work that comes out of Freshwater is pool digs, site cuts and drainage.

The ground under Freshwater

On the beach and headland, Freshwater ground runs to coastal sand over sandstone, near Freshwater Beach. Toward Freshwater headland the Freshwater sand runs deep over silt, so drainage and shoring carry the job and the walls are battered back. Around Curl Curl, the sand won't stand, so the dig is shored or battered and the sump keeps it dry.

The council, access, and getting to you

Freshwater is Northern Beaches Council ground; with nothing flagged around Freshwater Beach, the dig sits under the DA or CDC. The Freshwater crew comes in off Oliver Street or Lawrence Street, where it's tight to get a truck down the inner streets.

Excavation in Freshwater, answered

How much does excavation cost in Freshwater?

It depends on the volume of material, the ground (coastal sand over sandstone on the beach and headland), access for the machine and how far spoil has to be carted. Every job gets a written quote after a site look, with the dig, cartage and cleanup spelled out, so you know what’s included before anything starts.

Do I need council approval before you dig in Freshwater?

Usually, if the excavation is part of a build. Cut and fill beyond set limits, work near boundaries and anything on a lot with a flood, bushfire or heritage overlay needs approval as part of the DA or CDC. We work to the approved plans; check with your certifier before the dig is booked.

How long does an excavation job take in Freshwater?

A trench, pool dig or single pad is a day or two; a knock-down site cut or a basement runs longer and depends on volume, ground and weather. Dates come with the quote, not after.

Is there rock in Freshwater?

Yes. Coastal sand over sandstone on the beach and headland. On the headlands, the plateau and the slopes, sandstone is at or near the surface, so pools, basements and garage cuts are rock jobs: sawn at the boundaries, broken in the middle, carted as rock. It’s in the quote from the site look.

Can you dig a pool in the sand at Freshwater?

Yes, and it’s the standard flats pool. Sand walls don’t stand, so the dig is shored or battered, the water table is pumped from a sump, and the shell goes in fast once the hole’s at level. The pool builder’s engineer usually wants the base checked for silt.

Do you do knock-down rebuild site cuts in Freshwater?

Yes. The old house down, slab and footings out, the block stripped and the new pad cut and compacted, as one run if you want the demolition handled too.

Do you do duplex site cuts in Freshwater?

Yes. One house down, the block stripped, and two pads cut and compacted to the engineer’s spec, with the basement dug if the design has one.

My Freshwater house is a terrace with no side access. Can you still excavate?

Yes. Small machines go through the house or over the fence by crane, and spoil comes out by conveyor or barrow. Slower than a side-gate job, but it’s how most inner-suburb digs are done.
